ABSTRACT

Advances in technology, including instrumentation and video-imaging, have led to rapid progress in laparoscopic surgery. Accordingly, we can perform many procedures that previously required a laparotomy by laparoscopy. Operative laparoscopy, however, demands a higher degree of technical skill and a greater variety of equipment than required for diagnostic laparoscopy or tubal sterilization. Knowledge of anatomy and pathology and the familiarity of the surgeon with the instruments are mandatory. Depending upon personal preference, the surgeon can perform the procedure using laser, ultrasound scalpel, electrocautery, or scissors.
