ABSTRACT

Surface dynamics deals with the change of surface characteristics with time, which is often referred to as surface reconstruction. The observation of the surface reconstruction depends on the reference state from which the change occurs, and if one cannot define the reference state then the surface reconstruction cannot be dealt quantitatively or in a generic sense. This problem was found with moderately hydrophilic copolymer of ethylene-vinyl alcohol, which is described in Chapter 23. The reference state depends on the history of a sample, and the change cannot be reproduced without precise knowledge of the history of a sample [1]. In many cases dealing with surface reconstruction, the reference state is the original state of surface that was created by a film preparation process. In the case of hydrophobic recovery, the reference state is the surface immediately after making the surface hydrophilic.
