ABSTRACT

Due to the impermeable nature of the nail plate, topical therapy of the nail in onychomycosis has been a real challenge. Current research on nail permeation focuses on overcoming the nail barrier properties by means of chemical treatments (Kobayashi et al. 1998), penetration enhancers, as well as physical and mechanical approaches. Ef—cacy of these methods has been mainly carried out by the most common in vitro screening, which is a conventional long-term diffusion study using conventional diffusion cells, which has limitations. As a result of failure or poor performance of topical treatment, a lot of interest has been directed toward —nding a more ef—cient and robust method for screening.
