ABSTRACT

The characteristic structure of human nails renders the nail resistant to penetration of permeants. Although nail permeability is generally poor, previous studies have shown the penetration of small to moderate hydrophilic permeants and slightly hydrophobic antifungal agents across the nail. This chapter covers the nail properties critical for nail permeability, such as hydration and electrical properties, and reviews nail permeability and formulation factors in–uencing nail permeability.
