ABSTRACT

The WAP Forum was formed after Omnipoint, a U.S. network operator, issued a tender for the supply of mobile information service. This resulted in responses from different vendors using proprietary technology to deliver the information, including HDML from Unwired Planet (now Phone.com). Vendors responding to the tender were informed that a common standard was desired and not proprietary technology. Because of the similarity of the vendors’ approach, it made sense for them to cooperate to define such a standard.
