ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Stroke is the third cause of death and leading cause of disability in the United States and Europe. According to data from the American Stroke Association, each year about 700,000 individuals experience a new or recurrent stroke; 160,000 of these events are fatal. In terms of care and disability, it is estimated that the annual cost of stroke totals approximately $56.8 billion ( 1 )1.
