Let us consider sliding contact from the standpoint of a single macro contact, their types, materials, terminology, etc.

Counterfaces take two forms: cylindrical (crossed rods), (Fig. 19.1) and flat (pin on disk) (Fig. 19.2). These refer to the shape of the counterface surface, either a cylindrical surface rotating around its own axis or a disk-shape rotating around the center of the disk. Certain applications favor one form or the other. The choice of counterface shape is generally based on the available space and the allowable methods of manufacture for the current requirements. Frequently the size and shape are dictated by the application and what components the counterface must fit through or over during installation and operation.
