ABSTRACT

In previous chapters in this book, our primary focus was on understanding the benefits of content delivery, reviewing the relationship between Web servers, application servers, and back-end database servers, and examining how a content delivery provider, such as Akamai, structures their network and uses a markup language to facilitate data delivery. Although our prior explanation of Content Delivery Network (CDN) operations was of sufficient detail to provide readers with a firm understanding of CDN operations, two key content delivery functions were glossed over. Those functions are caching and load balancing, both of which will be covered in more detail in this chapter.
