ABSTRACT

A project in which no risks have been identified should obviously not encounter any problems during execution. The use of standards is the main reason behind the lower cost of developing hardware. The quest for standardization has been constant in this field. Whether it consisted of data recording, interfaces, integrated circuit pin layouts, or circuit assembly connectors, the lack of standards has always been seen as an obstacle to progress and market penetration. In software, standardization has been widely perceived as an obstacle to creativity. Reusability is still being pursued and even though some progress has been made with objectoriented methodologies, it is far from approaching the level of standardization that hardware has achieved. Maybe one day, the benefits that standardization can bring about in an entire industry will be recognized.
