Today, public safety and first-responder networks demand solutions based on open standards that perform better than existing emergency networks. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) constitute a promising technology for these environments. In this chapter, we propose a proof-of-concept public safety WMN for firefighter interventions based on current commercial equipment. We carry out a comprehensive market analysis in order to select a suitable platform to build our
prototype. The overall system performance is presented and validated according to specific performance criteria and system requirements for this case. Results show the feasibility of the solution, although further research is needed to fulfill all the requirements. Finally, open issues are discussed.
