When a program is started to investigate a new drug substance, the preformulator is, as mentioned earlier, usually presented with a very small amount of drug substance.
Since the drug substance has to be formulated into a dosage form for use in clinical trials, and if the clinical results so warrant, eventually into a marketed product, it is important to know which raw materials may be used in combination with the drug.
