ABSTRACT
In Chapter 3, we focused on understanding basic IPv4 addressing and the role of the Domain Name System. We also reviewed binary and hexadecimal numbering and the composition of different IP addresses. Although we briefly mentioned RFC 1918 addresses in Chapter 3, a discussion of the role of special IP addresses (to include RFC 1918 addresses) was deferred until this chapter. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to obtain a detailed understanding of the role of special IP addresses and the restrictions they place on the configuration and operation of devices in a TCP/IP network environment.
