ABSTRACT
The economic analysis provides cost information to be used to evaluate the applicability of soil washing technology for small arms firing range lead removal projects. Preliminary site preparation, permits and regulatory requirements, initiation of monitoring programs, waste disposal, sampling and analysis, and site cleanup and restoration were considered to be the responsible party’s or site owner’s obligations. The mobile commercial soil washing process design is applicable for removal of lead from soils at small arms firing ranges. Mobilization of the soil washing system consisted of transportation to the site, assembly, shakedown, on-line training of local personnel, and initiation of health and safety monitoring. Several assumptions were used to develop the costs of the full-scale commercial soil washing system. Treatability study costs included collecting samples, analyzing the results, and preparing design and operating criteria for the full-scale treatment plant.
