ABSTRACT

Five borings, SB-9 through SB-13, were drilled to determine whether there was adequate DNAPL in the proposed test zone to conduct a surfactant/foam flood (see Figure 4.1). Additionally, the typical permeability distribution of selected alluvial samples from the test area was assessed by measurement of their grain-size distribution. The vertical contrast in permeability is important because it determines the vertical migration of surfactant and foam during a surfactant/foam flood as well as variation with depth of the horizontal velocity of injected fluids. A total of 105 samples from the five borings drilled in March 1996 were analyzed to determine their grain-size distributions for particles less than 4 mm. A final objective was to refine the coring, sampling, and analytical procedures to be used for subsequent borings drilled at OU2 for the surfactant/foam demonstration.
