ABSTRACT

Obesity is rapidly becoming the single greatest health threat facing our society. Patients need to appreciate the concept that obesity is a chronic disease like diabetes or hypertension that will require long-term treatment. Although dozens of behavioral techniques are used as part of the behavioral treatment of obesity, several have been shown to enhance compliance with a program of diet and exercise. Exercise plays a major role in assisting with weight maintenance, and there is mounting evidence that increased physical activity plays a crucial role in the prevention and management of many chronic diseases even in the absence of weight loss. Topiramate is an antiepileptic agent that has been found to reduce body weight in patients with a variety of disorders including epilepsy, migraine headaches, bipolar disorder, and binge eating disorder. Dietary changes, physical activity, and pharmacotherapy have been proven effective in weight reduction and improvement of comorbid conditions.
