ABSTRACT

Kronmayer (1) reported on the use of rotating burrs and rasps under carbon dioxide snow and ether spray cryosthesia for the “scarless” removal of various skin lesions in 1905. Iver son successfully removed traumatic tattoos with sandpaper in 1947. This technique was complicated by the development of silica granuloma in some patients. Dermabrasion was reintroduced in 1953 by Kurtin (2), who used a wire brush with cryosthesia to improve acne scars and other superficial skin lesions. Orentreich, working with Kurtin, developed and re fined much of the dermabrasion equipment in use today.
