ABSTRACT

Susceptibility testing of bacteria is a routine practice in diagnostic microbiology among both medical and veterinary disciplines. Most modem routine methods evolved from those that were developed soon after antibiotics became part of clinical practice, and they involve either antibiotic dilution in liquid or solid media, an extension of the measurement of minimum inhibitory concentrations, or diffusion through agar. In recent times, these have been supplemented with tests to detect enzymes or resistance genes for specific organisms and resistance problems.
