ABSTRACT

The previous chapter discussed the coding of information in the auditory nerve, the peripheral segment of the auditory nervous system. This chapter continues our coverage by addressing several fundamental topics pertaining to the representation of information at various levels in the central auditory nervous system, from the cochlear nuclei through the cortex. Students wishing to pursue their study of the central auditory nervous system and related issues will find many extensive reviews that will facilitate their efforts (e.g., Popper and Fay, 1992; Webster et al., 1992; Ehret and Romand, 1997; Irvine, 1986, 1992; Møller, 2000; Palmer and Shamma, 2004; Musiek and Baran, 2007).
