ABSTRACT

The role played by knowledge artifacts, or agents, was explained in Chapter 7, with reference to MIT’s Oxygen Project. Knowledge engineering is part of a technological evolution that often comes in waves. In the mid 1980s Dr. Alan Kay predicted a third computer epoch. The first, he said, was the institutionalization of computer usage in the corporate business environment. The second was the personal computer and its windows-icon-mouse interface. Kay correctly foresaw that the late 1990s would see the next wave, which would intimately fuse computers, networks, and knowledge engineering.
