ABSTRACT

Wireless multimedia is being discussed actively among researchers and developers. In a wireless environment, the transmission signal will suffer intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath propagation. At high SNR, this existing ISI causes an irreducible “floor” for the BER [1]. The images that are to be transmitted over noisy channels are extremely sensitive to the bit errors that can severely degrade the quality of the image at the receiver. This necessitates the application of error control channel coding in the transmission. Powerful and effective channel coding is necessary for image transmission through a wireless environment. Recently turbo code has attracted enormous attention because of its remarkable error correcting capability [2,3]. Moreover, its iterative decoding scheme and soft channel information utilization are particularly suitable for compressed image transmission [4-8].
