ABSTRACT
Recent advances in the technology and integration of control systems and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MESs) means that project costs (including validation costs), capital costs and ongoing life-cycle costs (also including validation costs) may now be significantly reduced. This chapter explores the original driving factors leading toward such advances-the technology and the advantages it can bring. Specific focus is given to the associated validation requirements, long-term support issues and future trends.
