ABSTRACT

Even though the concept of surface tension of a solid is a much more diffi cult one than the concept of surface tension of a liquid, the defi nition of both of these is very elementary, i.e.:

γ i iiG≡ − 1 2

Δ coh [II-33]*

which simply defi nes the surface tension of any condensed material (i) as minus one half its free energy of (non-covalent) cohesion; see Chapter IV.
