ABSTRACT

Widely distributed in the tropics and subtropical regions of the globe, over 2.5 billion people-approximately 40% of the world’s population-are at risk for dengue virus (DENV) infection. In the past 30 years DENV has spread epidemically around the globe, increasing dramatically in both disease frequency and severity. Current estimates suggest up to 1% of the world’s population is infected with at least one of the four serotypes of DENV every year [1-3]. In the second half of the last century dengue has emerged as a serious global pathogen.
