ABSTRACT

Adenoviruses have traditionally been associated with respiratory tract infections, eye infections, and diarrhea; however, in recent years they have also been associated with heart infections and obesity. Adenoviruses have increasingly been recognized as signicant viral pathogens, especially among immunocompromised individuals who experience a high risk of mortality. They are a very common cause of respiratory and gastrointestinal illness in children and young adults. The application of molecular methods has led to the recognition of several new types associated with human illness. Adenoviruses can be spread through human contact and by contaminated fomites, food, and water.
