ABSTRACT

Members of the genus Rhizomucor are Zygomycetes belonging in the order Mucorales. These saprophytic fungi are ubiquitous in nature and can be isolated from soil and decaying organic materials, worldwide. Rhizomucor spp., and especially R. pusillus and R. variabilis, are also known as agents of zygomycosis, e.g., frequently fatal mycotic diseases in immunocompromised patients (infections caused by mucoralean fungi are often referred to as mucormycosis too).1 An expanding body of data is becoming available that demonstrates the opportunistic pathogenic potential of these fungi.
