ABSTRACT

This chapter first addresses enhancements based on multiresolution schemes due to the use of multicodes, and second, it considers the high-order coded modulations and single-code wideband code division multiple access as a means of increasing the bit rate per user, and as a result increasing the capacity of the digital cellular radio network due to increased spectral efficiency. At last, the spatial dimension by means of MIMO systems, based on spatial multiplexing, promising impressive increases in terms of capacity, will be presented. The combination of the enhancements is accomplished by adaptive transmission techniques. The final section of this chapter presents the use of several adaptive transmission techniques, namely, link adaptation and macrodiversity-combining techniques, reducing the required transmitted power of the digital cellular radio network.
