ABSTRACT

Some people mistakenly think that encryption and data security are new ideas, but in reality encryption has been known and used for a long time. Julius Caesar used an alphabet cipher to make sure the enemy could not read a message if it fell into enemy hands. George Washington had his military intelligence use code books containing code numbers. Each code number represents a specific word. A person who needs to encode a message has to look up the code book to assemble a message, then when the coded message is delivered, a copy of the book is used to decode the message. These coded messages assured Washington that if a message fell into enemy hands, it could not be understood. Needless to say, these code books are important; if these code books fell into enemy hands, the security system could be breached and made useless.
