ABSTRACT

Are you aware of the multitude of privacy-related laws and regulations that exist in the United States? You need to have a working knowledge of at least the existence of such laws if you are:

• Updating or creating security or privacy policies or procedures for your organization

• A multinational company • Planning a divestiture • Planning an acquisition or merger • Preparing for a major system or application change or upgrade • Considering major changes to your Human Resources policies or

procedures • Considering the installation of a new communications system • Planning a new marketing strategy • Preparing to gather customer/client information • Preparing to use existing customer/client information in ways other

than was intended at the time of collection

The following is a listing of current privacy-related federal laws in addition to those described in previous chapters in this book. Keep in mind when scanning this list that each state also has its own privacy-related laws and regulations for which you need to be aware when doing business there. A nice listing of some of the state laws is found in this book in Chapter 24, entitled “ID Theft: When Bad Things Happen to Your Good Name.”
