To standardize anthropometric measurements (see entry “Anthropometry” in this encyclopedia), the body is positioned into defined static postures:

O Standing: the typical instruction is “stand erect; heels together; rears of heels, buttock, and shoulders touching a vertical wall; head erect; look straight ahead; arms hang straight down (or upper arms hang, forearms are horizontal and extended forward); fingers extended.”
