ABSTRACT

The primary goal of trainers and system designers is to improve operator performance in response to changes in the system state. However, recognizing and responding to such changes requires knowledge of those features of the environment to which a response is required. These features are referred to as cues, and they represent elements of the environment that hold some meaning or value for the operator (Ratcliff and McKoon 1995). Cues are generally acquired through experience and are particularly useful in complex operational contexts, or when the information arising from the environment is dynamic and/or uncertain.
