ABSTRACT
The primary role of auditory alerts is to attract attention. They are used extensively in settings where workload demands prevent thorough or continuous monitoring of system functions and the surrounding environment (e.g. intensive care units, factories, aircraft flight decks). The advantage of using the auditory modality for alerting purposes is that the ears receive information regardless of head position and task activities.
