ABSTRACT

Are they called other things? Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) are known by a variety of terms across the world. In the USA, cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) is sometimes used to refer to this group of disorders. In Japan, they have been known as occupational cervicobrachial disorders (OCD), in Australia as repetitive strain injuries (RSI), and more recently occupational overuse syndrome (OOS). The scientific literature also provides other examples of the variety in terminology: ergonomic injuries; neuromuscular disorders; neuromusculoskeletal conditions of the upper extremity; work-related upper extremity disorders (WRUED); work-related musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb (WRMSD-UL) or work-related upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (WRUEMSD); musculoskeletal misuse syndrome; and work-related soft-tissue disorders.
