ABSTRACT

The typical eggs are elliptical shaped and thin-shelled, which resemble those of hookworms, except for the longer length (73 ~ 95 × 40 ~ 50 µm) and pointed ends. The eggs are usually laid segmenting in the morula stage of embryonation. Nevertheless, differential diagnosis between hookworm and Trichostrongylus spp. by egg morphology is dif‘cult. Some eggs are almost practically indistinguishable on cellophane-thick smears (Kato-Katz stool preparation), one of the most commonly used stool examination methods. The larvae have a characteristic small caudal knob at the posterior end.
