ABSTRACT

The main symptom of public louse infestation is itching (and the formation of itching red papules), usually in the pubic hair area, due to hypersensitive reaction to louse saliva, which can become more intense a few weeks after initial infestation. A characteristic gray-blue or slate coloration (maculae caeruleae) may appear at the feeding sites for days, particularly on the lower abdomen and thighs. Nits and/or lice may be found attached to hairs.
