ABSTRACT

Zovirax (acyclovir) capsules, 200 mg, has been widely available in the United States for more than 11 years for the management of recurrent genital herpes. Throughout this time, more than 21 million people in the United States have received prescriptions for oral Zovirax, predominantly for genital herpes. After initial diagnosis and treatment by a physician, recurrent genital herpes can be managed by treatment with Zovirax in a dose of 200 mg five times a day. This chapter provides background information on the rationale to support the conversion of Zovirax from prescription to over-the-counter (OTC) status for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes.
