ABSTRACT

Statistics of oil and fat production are based mainly on vegetable oils and sometimes include animal fats. For example, Oil World data cover 13 vegetable oils and fats from four animal sources while reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture are confined to nine vegetable oils. A small part of total production is used for animal feed (estimated at 6%, but not including feeding of whole oilseeds or seed meals containing residual oil) and for industrial purposes (14%), but the majority is used for food consumption (80%).
