ABSTRACT

Packaging is of essential importance for achieving the primary objective of the food supply chain, feeding large numbers of consumers, each with individual consumption and shopping habits. One of the most important functions of packaging in food products is the function of preservation. Various methodologies of incorporating food preservation technologies in packaging technology have been developed over the years. This is of essential importance. Today’s modern packaging technology has reduced losses of valuable food products during distribution to levels less than 1%. However, in developing countries due to poor packaging and storage, food losses can still reach levels of up to 50% losses that the community itself cannot afford, given the scarcity of food (Sonneveld, 2000).
