The occurrence of turkey X disease in England in the 1960s drew attention to the health hazards of mycotoxins, specifically aflatoxins (AFs), and spurred research on these prevalent toxic and carcinogenic compounds. Since the 1960s, significant progress has been made in characterizing the biosynthesis of aflatoxin and its penultimate precursor, sterigmatocystin (ST).
