ABSTRACT
The anatomy of the parapharyngeal space is either wonderfully intricate or frighteningly complicated, depending on the experience of the operator. Failure to appreciate the anatomic relationships can lead to selection of an incorrect surgical approach. The result may be inadequate access, with difficulty with tumor removal, damage to vital structures, or tumor spillage, and thus recurrent neoplasms.
