ABSTRACT

Leppin (2001) points out that approximately 25% of the natural gas being brought into production from new sources requires H

S removal and disposal. Consequently, sulfur removal processes discussed in Chapter 5 will play an increasingly

larger role in future gas processing. Currently only two methods are available for dealing with large quantities of H

S:

• Disposal of the gas by injection into underground formations • Conversion of the H

S into a usable product, elemental sulfur

Where environmental regulations permit and production of elemental sulfur is not economically attractive, injection wells provide a safe means for H

S disposal. Jones et al. (2004) discuss design and operation of a facility that enriches an H

S stream before injection into a disposal well. Oberding et al. (2004) provide additional details on the project.
