ABSTRACT

In addition to the actual recovery procedures, the planner also needs to document the process that will be used to manage the recovery from any type of event. Event management is about communication and response, and because those two elements are needed even when the problem is not at disaster level, they can and should become part of the fabric of an organization. The goals of an event-management program are shown in Exhibit 13.1

In my experience, most organizations are quite good at responding to an event, particularly in the data center. For example, if an application becomes unavailable due to some type of hardware failure, the application and infrastructure teams responsible are quickly paged to repair or replace the hardware and bring the application back online very quickly. What most organizations are not good at is talking to one another.
