Distillation is a physical process for separating a liquid mixture into its constituents. When such a mixture is partially vaporized, the vapor normally has a composition different from that of the residual liquid. Implied in the method is the condensation of the vapor to form a product liquid, called the

distillate

. The residual liquid product is often called the

bottoms

.
