ABSTRACT

Anemia is a frequent complication occurring in chronic diseases, including chronic inflammation and=or infection, neoplastic states, and end-stage renal diseases. The bioclinical picture of this anemia associates, besides the symptoms related to the causing disease and the inflammatory syndrome, a normocytic or slightly microcytic anemia with low serum iron parameters, including serum iron and transferrin saturation, all contrasting with an hyperferritinemia (for reviews, see Refs. 1-3).
