ABSTRACT

Advances in neonatal and pediatric intensive care as well as refinements in the operative management of surgical diseases in children have greatly improved patient outcome in recent years. With improved outcome and longer survival, more information on long-term complications is becoming available. This chapter discusses complications related to the surgical diseases of the stomach and small bowel, as well as complications resulting from diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. As with other organ systems, knowledge of potential short-and longterm complications can help avoid or at least anticipate and ameliorate such complications. The following is a discussion of the complications related to pyloric stenosis, duodenal atresia, jejunoilieal atresia, malrotation, intussusception, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), andmeconium ileus (MI).
