ABSTRACT

In contrast to other areas of neuroscience research that have evolved only over the past three decades, roots of the neurobiology of aggression extend back into the 19th century. The basic objective of this chapter is to provide a historical background of the neurobiology of aggression and rage. A major purpose in applying a historical approach is that it can provide understanding of the rationale and strategies employed by noted investigators during the early years of such research. In doing so, it may likely offer insight into the directions that research in this Þeld generated more recently.
