ABSTRACT

The veterinary care of swine starts with the arrival of the animals at the facility. Clinical examination should be a standard procedure upon arrival. Swine purchased from agricultural sources usually have no health record, and microbiological sampling may be included as part of the clinical examination. Swine originating from specialized laboratory swine breeders are usually provided with a health monitoring report (HMR). The HMR should be studied for positive findings, and it should be considered whether positive findings pose a risk for the existing swine population in the facility. Until results from the clinical examination are available, swine should be housed in quarantine facilities.
