ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I aim to set the scene for what follows by summarizing the historical development of spatial statistics as a recognizable sub-branch of the statistics discipline. As with many other areas of statistical methodology, the important developments came not from the study of mathematics for its own sake, but from the needs of substantive applications, including in this case areas as diverse as astronomy, agriculture, ecology and mineral exploration.
