ABSTRACT

The mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, is used throughout the world to control mosquito populations. Indigenous to the southeastern United States and northeastern Mexico, it is one of the most widely distributed of all freshwater fish. When introduced into a rice field, the mosquitofish eat the water-borne mosquito larvae. Consequently, it is thought to be the most widely disseminated natural predator as well as the most popular form of mosquito control.
