ABSTRACT

The major thrust of this chapter is the adaptation of endoscopic technologies to improve the detection of precancerous lesions at a stage when they are still limited to the mucosa and curable by endoscopic means or minimally invasive surgery. The gastrointestinal (GI) cancer burden worldwide is immense. In 2002 there were 3.2 million new cases of GI cancer resulting in 2.4 million deaths (Ferlay et al. 2004). It
