ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by a reduction in bone mineralization and bone mass, leading to skeletal fragility and an increased predisposition to fractures. Osteoporosis has traditionally been considered a disease of women, owing to the higher prevalence of osteoporosis in women. However, 20 % of osteoporosis cases are in men, 1 and, as the proportion of older people in the population increases, there will be a concurrent increase in the number of men with osteoporosis and related fractures.
